University of Iowa Health Care represents Iowa’s comprehensive academic medical center, comprised of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics, and UI Physicians, the state’s largest multispecialty medical and surgical group practice.
UI Hospitals and Clinics, which includes the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, records more than 34,500 adult and pediatric acute care admissions each year. Clinic visits—on the main hospital campus, at locations in Iowa City and southeast Iowa, and at adult and pediatric outreach sites at community hospitals and clinics throughout the state—total more than 960,000 each year. UI Hospitals and Clinics physicians and staff also deliver medical care for the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System. Approximately 9,300 employees are part of the medical enterprise—including nearly 900 staff physicians and 2,150 nurses—assisted by a corps of more than 1,500 volunteers. In 2015 and 2016, UI Hospitals and Clinics was named the No. 1 employer in the health care industry in Forbes magazine’s list of “America’s Best Employers.”
Since 2010, UI Health Care has provided patients access to their medical information through its secure online patient portal, MyChart. This includes outpatient notes, inpatient history and physical exam information, discharge summaries, procedural and operative notes, and diagnostic testing results (available four days after finalization unless released earlier by the treating provider).
