The URMC is a multi-facility, tertiary and quaternary care provider and one of the nation’s top academic medical centers. It is the largest component of the University of Rochester—our area’s primary employer and economic driver—and centerpiece of the UR’s patient care, community outreach, health research and teaching missions. We serve ~1 million patients annually through our Strong Memorial, Golisano Children’s, and Highland Hospitals; James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute; Eastman Institute for Oral Health; UR Medicine Home Care; regional affiliates; and two long-term care facilities. Last year, our primary care and specialty providers in 250+ offices across the region oversaw care in ~1.7M visits.
URMC is a safety net provider for our region, providing ~$50-60M annually in charity care. We strive to improve health and overcome barriers for the underserved. We are uniquely equipped by virtue of our academic and community health missions, and by the depth and level of intellectual capital across the UR, to work with community stakeholders to develop, test, and grow the health delivery models and systems innovations that can become regional and national models.
We are increasingly keen to use patient/family insights to identify areas for improvement and more comprehensive engagement. Along with encompassing imperatives re: health care data/reporting and population health management, this leads us toward growing transparency across our health care encounters and initiatives. In 2015, we appointed our first Medical Director for Patient Engagement to build on our long tradition of patient-centeredness and use the opportunities afforded by emerging technologies to motivate patients (and their providers) around their active role in health. Implementing OpenNotes is a tremendous opportunity to expand this mission.
